Lab Grown vs. Natural Diamonds
The only difference between a natural diamond and lab grown diamond is how they are grown. Natural diamonds are formed deep within the Earth and found in nature with little to no human intervention. Lab grown diamonds, on the other hand, are grown in a lab with the help of scientists.
Since they require less time and can be produced more efficiently, lab grown diamonds typically offer a larger size or higher quality at a more accessible price.
How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Created?
Lab-Grown Diamonds are created in highly controlled laboratories using one of two methods: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).
Both methods begin with a diamond seed and replicate the conditions needed for diamond growth. HPHT uses extreme heat and pressure, similar to the natural diamond-forming process deep within the Earth. CVD uses methane gas and microwaves to create a carbon-rich plasma that deposits carbon atoms onto a diamond seed, building the stone layer by layer.
Both methods can produce Type IIa colorless Lab-Grown Diamonds, comparable to some of the rarest Natural Diamonds. The processes can also be adjusted to create colored Lab-Grown Diamonds.
